State Food Purchase Program
The Pennsylvania Association of Regional Food Banks (PARF) and the Westmoreland County Food Bank (WCFB) along with all Pennsylvania Food Banks have chosen to have a singular focus for their FY 2010-2011 State Advocacy efforts with a sole focus on obtaining $20 million for the State Food Purchase Program (SFPP).  As the state budgets number one defense against hunger and the anticipated tight budget year PARF and WCFB felt it prudent to direct all their focus and energy to SFPP.

We call on you to be active partners in this grassroots advocacy effort, as it will be the most effective means by which we can achieve a common goal.  That is, ensuring the most vulnerable among us have what should be a birthright access to ample and nutritious food.

ACT NOW!

Contact your Senator and Representative today and urge them to support a recommendation of $20 million for the State Food Purchase Program.

Support Funding for Child Nutrition Reauthorization
Child Nutrition Reauthorization has one of our most important legislative priorities.  President Obama pledged to end childhood hunger in America by 2015.  Key to achieving this is adequately funding and passing the Child Nutrition Re-Authorization Bill, which the Senate is now actively considering and this rare opportunity only comes along once every five years.

As you may know, the Westmoreland County Food Bank has offered the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) for 28 years.  Last summer, we fed 600 disadvantaged kids breakfasts and lunches at 19 sites around the county every day; SFSP is funded through the Child Nutrition Act.

Also included in this year’s proposed Bill is the Weekend without Hunger Act (H.R. 5012/S.3292).  This bill establishes a 5-year pilot program to provide nutritious food commodities to at-risk school children on weekends and during extended school holidays throughout the school year when they might not otherwise have access to food.  The Westmoreland County Food Bank would be greatly affected by the passing of this particular bill because we have in place a Weekend Backpack program that has no steady/regular funding stream and we struggle each year to keep this program afloat.

You can be a part of the solution!!  To help us secure a robustly funded and comprehensive Child Nutrition Act, click on this link to reach your Senator.

Please urge your Senator to vote to increase funding for the Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, S.3307.  Tell your Senator to support President Obama’s requested funding level, $10 billion over 10 years.
